There are a little over 90 naturally occurring elements found on our planet and the vast majority of these are native metals – metals that are found on earth in their metallic form. However, despite the large number of different available metals on our earth, in their purest form they are less than ideal for the tasks that we need them for in today’s modern age.

When designing anything for manufacture, it can be difficult to know whether your vision falls within the realms of possibility. Without in-depth manufacturing and industry knowledge, you might not know where to begin with product design, manufacturing processes or assembly.

The casting and foundry industries are not renowned for their environmental responsibility. If you were to imagine a metal foundry, you might think about large amounts of molten metals, chemicals and wasted materials plaguing the environment.

There’s very rarely such a thing as a finished casting that comes straight from the mould. There’s always some amount of finishing work before the casting can be considered a finished product. In some cases, this could be simple surface finishing, such as powder coating, anodising or alochroming. However, in the vast majority of cases, there’s excess material to remove.

This excess material comes in a number of different forms on a cast part, such as sprues, flash and runners but what are they and why are they caused?
